Eleven months after their union election accredited to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), workers at the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) send letters to the MAM board in anticipation of the annual meeting of the members of the Museum which took place virtually on Thursday, October 28.

Their letters emphasize a renewed call to MAM leaders to provide living wages, increased access to medicare, a workplace that fosters diversity and fairness, and to strike a first contract that recognizes the essential contributions of MAM workers to achieving the Museum’s mission and strategic direction. .

A public letter to the board of directors is also broadcast on Action Network in support of the workers. A link to sign the petition is available HERE.

The campaign of MAM workers to organize with IAMAW reflects their dedication to MAM’s mission and their desire to strengthen the Milwaukee community. Almost 90% of MAM employees in the newly organized bargaining unit reside in Milwaukee County. To do the best job possible and to lead the arts and culture sector regionally and nationally, the Museum must begin by equitably valuing its employee base.

Without providing a fair and decent salary to its employees, the museum will not be able to recruit and retain a diverse staff across all departments that truly reflects the Milwaukee community. By counting only the employees covered by the contract, the Museum has lost more than 120 cumulative years of experience in the last 4 months. Improving working conditions is essential to reduce turnover.

About the IAM – The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is one of the largest industrial unions in North America and represents nearly 600,000 active and retired members in the fields of aerospace, transportation, manufacturing, shipbuilding, woodworking and others.
